Oxford Development used to partner with local union workers and contractors to build safe, reliable projects that supported local families and local communities. Now, this is changing.
Under new leadership, Oxford is awarding work to contractors like RDC Inc.. Some of these firms bring in out-of-town labor, pay below area-standard wages, without benefits and fall short on safety and training.
When unscrupulous contractors and labor brokers bring in out-of-town workers that are misclassified as independent contractors and when proper taxes are not collected, schools, roads, parks, and public services all lose vital funding. This practice has a detrimental effect on all Pittsburghers.
Oxford’s choices may boost their profits, but they hurt Pittsburgh communities and our local skilled workforce. Fewer opportunities for local workers and apprentices mean our city loses the foundation it needs to grow. Local workers and honest contractors are left behind.
Local men and women looking to start a good family sustaining career in the trades are taken away. In addition, taxpayers are robbed of the results from the money invested in workforce development.
By refusing to pay area standard wages, Oxford Development, and RDC are:
-Driving down living standards
-Accelerating gentrification and displacement
-Undermining our skilled workforces
-Draining tax dollars from our city
