Why Union Wages Are Better: Breaking Down the Pay Gap

The Union Wage Advantage in the Carpenters Industry

Union carpenters consistently earn more than non-union workers doing the same jobs. This difference—called the union wage difference—measures how much higher union wages are compared to similar non-union roles. For members of the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters (EAS Carpenters), that difference means greater financial stability, better benefits, and a stronger path to retirement than non-union counterparts.

How Much More Do Union Carpenters Make?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), union members across all industries earn more on average than non-union workers. In 2024:

  • Union workers’ median weekly earnings: $1,169
  • Non-union workers’ median weekly earnings: $1,029
  • Union wage difference: 13.6% (BLS, 2024)

For the construction industry, including carpenters:

  • Unionized construction workers’ median weekly earnings: $1,530
  • Non-union construction workers’ median weekly earnings: $1,051
  • Union wage difference in construction: 45.6% (BLS, 2024)

The numbers show that being a union carpenter provides a significant financial advantage over working non-union.

Why Do Union Carpenters Earn More?

1. Collective Bargaining Power

EAS Carpenters use collective bargaining to negotiate contracts on behalf of members to secure competitive wages, benefits, and working conditions. This ensures fair pay that keeps up with inflation and industry standards.

2. Standardized Pay Scales

Union contracts establish clear wage structures based on skill level, years of experience, and certifications. Non-union workers often lack these protections, leading to inconsistent pay and the possibility of misclassification or wage theft.

3. Training & Certification

Through the EAS Carpenters registered apprenticeship program, members receive top-tier apprenticeship and journeyman upgrade programs. Skilled carpenters earn higher wages, and union training gives members a competitive edge in the workforce.

4. Job Security & Benefits

Union carpenters have job stability, comprehensive health insurance, and pensions and annuities. Non-union workers may face job insecurity and often pay out-of-pocket for benefits like healthcare.
