Philadelphia, PA, October 24 2024 – Today, the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters (EAS Carpenters Union) is proud to announce their endorsement of Malcom Kenyatta for Pennsylvania Auditor General. This endorsement recognizes Kenyatta’s work towards expanding worker protections while serving in Pennsylvania’s General Assembly, and his commitment to continuing that fight as Auditor General.
“Representative Kenyatta has been a strong advocate for unions and working class families during his time in Pennsylvania’s State Assmebly, and will continue to champion workers’ rights as Audtior General,” said William C. Sproule, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters. “We need representatives who understand the issues affecting the thousands of families in Pennsylvania. Representative Kenyatta recognizes the obstacles we face including wage theft, employee misclassification, and union busting. We look forward to advocating alongside him to protect good wages for our workers along with the right to unionize.”
Estimates show that annually, more than two million construction workers across the United States are misclassified, stripping workers of important protections such as minimum wage, safe working conditions, overtime pay, and family and medical leave. To combat this tax fraud and wage theft, as Auditor General Kenyatta would work to create the first-ever Bureau of Labor and Worker Protections to hold businesses accountable and verify they are following labor laws concerning independent contractors.
“I’m honored to receive the endorsement of the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenter. Organized labor has always been the cornerstone of a fair economy, and I’ve been proud to fight for the rights and protections that working people deserve,” said Kenyatta. “As Auditor General, I will continue that fight by creating a Bureau of Labor and Worker Protections to combat wage theft, prevent union busting, and ensure that every worker in Pennsylvania receives the dignity, respect, and fair treatment they’ve earned. Together, we’ll build a future where labor’s role is strengthened, and every public dollar is used to uplift working families.”
